Torrevieja has one of the largest British communities in Spain. Many owners split the year between the UK and a townhouse or apartment here, which means plenty of homes sit empty for weeks at a time, with the shutters down for everyone to see.

Homes in Torrevieja

Home security in Torrevieja: what we protect

Away from the seafront flats and La Mata, most British-owned homes are on the urbanisations: ground-floor bungalows and townhouses with a front patio, a back door and a solarium on the roof. That means several ways in, and each one needs covering.

Neighbourhoods

Where we install in Torrevieja

Every part of Torrevieja is covered. These are the areas we are asked about most, and what the homes there are usually like.

  • La Mata

The northern end of Torrevieja, with its own long beach and a quieter feel than the centre. Mostly apartments and townhouses, many of them second homes owned by British and other northern European buyers.

  • Los Balcones

A long-established area of detached villas and bungalows south of the centre, popular with British residents who live here most of the year. Gardens and side gates mean more ways in than a flat.

  • La Siesta

A residential urbanisation inland from the centre, made up largely of bungalows and townhouses around communal pools. Many are let or used for a few weeks at a time.

  • El Chaparral

Close to the centre, with apartment blocks and terraced houses within walking distance of the shops and the seafront.

  • Aguas Nuevas

North of the centre, a mix of townhouses and apartments in quiet residential streets, a short drive from the beaches.

  • Torreta Florida

Further inland, an area of bungalows and small villas with patios and roof solariums, where a lot of homes are empty outside the main holidays.

Also covered: Lago Jardín, Los Altos. Not listed? Put your postcode in the form and we confirm it.

The right set-up

The right alarm system for your home in Torrevieja

The free survey decides the final kit, but this is what we usually fit in Torrevieja, depending on the kind of home.

  • Apartments

A seafront or La Mata apartment usually needs the Kit Tranquilidad as it comes: entrance door, camera detectors, keypad and siren. Ground-floor flats with a garden or terrace add a sensor on that door.

  • Bungalows and townhouses

The classic Torrevieja bungalow has a front patio, a back door and stairs up to a solarium. Each door gets a sensor (€1/month for extras) and a camera detector covers the living room, which anyone coming in has to cross.

  • Villas

Detached villas in Los Balcones or on the edge of town are better with the Kit Tranquilidad Plus and an outdoor detector on the garden side, so the alert comes before anyone reaches the house.

Local advice

Three things that help in Torrevieja

  • Patio and solarium doors

Bungalows usually have more doors than people think: front, back and roof. A sensor on each means the alarm reacts before anyone is inside.

  • Shutters down for months

Closed shutters tell everyone the house is empty. Keep the alarm armed between visits and check from the app that it is.

  • Lending the house to family

Give them a tag or disarm for them from your phone. You see every arming and disarming in the app.

Local guide

Protecting a home in Torrevieja: what we have learned

In Torrevieja we mostly protect bungalows and townhouses on urbanisations, and apartments near the sea. What they have in common is that they are often empty: owners come out for a few weeks at a time, lend the place to family, or let it in summer. A monitored alarm suits that pattern, because it does not depend on a neighbour noticing something is wrong.

The most common mistake we see is protecting only the front door. A typical bungalow has three ways in, at the front, at the back and through the solarium, and the back door is the one that is out of sight. Covering all three costs a couple of euros a month extra and closes the gap. In apartments, ground-floor terraces facing the communal gardens deserve the same attention.

Before you fly home, check that the alarm is armed from the app, leave a tag with whoever holds your keys, and tell us if anyone will be using the house while you are away. That way the monitoring centre has the full picture if something happens.

The keypad goes just inside the door you use most. A tag or the app does the rest.

Living with an alarm in Torrevieja

Through the year, and when nobody is home

Through the year in Torrevieja

Torrevieja is busiest in summer and around Easter, when holiday lets are full and owners come out for their weeks in the sun. From autumn to spring, whole streets on some urbanisations go quiet, with shutters down and post piling up behind the gate. That is when many owners are back in the UK, and when an alarm watched around the clock matters most.

Squatters

Empty bungalows on quiet urbanisations are exactly what squatters look for, and the Costa Blanca is no exception. In Spain the difference is timing: caught in the act, an intrusion is a police matter dealt with on the spot; once people have moved in, it usually becomes a court case that can take months. That is why the alarm’s images go to a person who confirms the intrusion and alerts the police while it is happening.

Getting it installed

Alicante-Elche airport is about 40 minutes away by car, so plenty of owners fly in for a long weekend and have the alarm fitted while they are here. If you can’t be there, a neighbour, a friend or your key holder can let the technician in and be shown how everything works. Installation is usually arranged within 1 to 5 days of signing up.

How it protects you

If a burglar breaks into your home in Torrevieja

The same thing happens whether you are asleep in the UK or at the beach down the road.

How a Segurma alarm protects your home The sensors at home send the alert to Segurma’s monitoring centre, a person confirms it and alerts the police, and you are notified on your phone. Your home Monitoring centre Police alerted Sensors armed You’re told at once
  1. 1

    A sensor is triggered

A door opens or a camera detector picks up movement, and the images go to Segurma’s monitoring centre.

  2. 2

    A person checks

An operator looks at the images before anyone is called, so false alarms do not send the police to your door.

  3. 3

    The police are alerted

With the images as evidence: a report from a licensed security company, not a vague call from a neighbour.

  4. 4

    You are told at once

The alert reaches your phone wherever you are, and the siren lets the intruder know they have been seen.

While you are away

Peace of mind in Torrevieja, wherever you are

Picture a January night. You are at home in Dublin, and your bungalow in Torreta Florida has been shut since the October mid-term, like half the houses on your street: shutters down, patio chairs stacked under a cover, nobody due until Easter. Some time after midnight your phone lights up on the bedside table. The patio door at the back has opened, and the camera detector in the living room has picked up movement. By the time you have found your glasses, the alert is already in front of someone in Spain who is wide awake and whose job is to look.

At Segurma’s Alarm Receiving Centre the operator is going through what the detector captured: two figures with a phone torch crossing your tiled floor and, in the sound, the patio door giving way. That is a real break-in, so the police are alerted with those images in hand, which is what an alarm connected to the police actually means on an inland urbanisation where most windows stay dark until spring. The indoor siren goes off in the room with them and they leave the way they came, over the back wall towards the next row of bungalows. The house is empty again when the patrol pulls up, but their pictures are already with the officers.

In the morning you message the president of your community, who lives in Torreta Florida all year and has kept a spare key since you bought the place. He walks round after his coffee, you disarm the alarm from your kitchen in Dublin so he can go in without setting it off, and he sends you photos: a bent lock, screwdriver marks on the frame, nothing missing. A carpenter from town fits a new lock that afternoon while the president keeps him company, and once they have closed up you arm the bungalow again from your phone and watch it confirm. Before he goes home he promises to raise the lighting on the back path at the next community meeting.

Most months the app is far duller than that, which is how it should be. The woman who comes in to air the rooms, run the taps and check the shower trays for damp has a tag of her own, so you know she has been without having to chase her. You stop asking friends who are out for Christmas to drive past and look at your shutters. At Easter you disarm the bungalow while you wait for your case at Alicante airport, so you open your own front gate to silence rather than to the siren. And when Torrevieja empties after the summer and Torreta Florida goes quiet until spring, your holiday home is the one on the street with someone keeping watch through every night you spend in Dublin.

Questions

What owners in Torrevieja ask us

Anything else? Ask us on WhatsApp, in English.

I only come out a few times a year. Is an alarm worth it?

That is when it makes the most sense. An intrusion is checked on camera and passed to the police while it is happening, instead of being discovered on your next visit.

Do you cover La Mata and the urbanisations?

Yes, Segurma installs all over Torrevieja, from La Mata to Los Balcones and Aguas Nuevas. Torrevieja postcodes go from 03181 to 03186, with 03188 for La Mata; put yours in the form and we confirm it.

Will it still work if the electricity goes off while I’m in the UK?

Yes. The control panel has a backup battery and connects over the internet and 4G/5G, so it keeps reporting during a power cut or if the fibre drops.

My bungalow has a solarium. Does that need a sensor?

If the solarium door leads into the house, yes. Roof terraces on joined bungalows can often be reached from next door, so it is worth covering.

Can I lend the house to friends without giving them my code?

Yes. Give them a contactless tag, or disarm the alarm for them from your phone when they arrive. You see every arming and disarming in the app.

Is there a Segurma office near Torrevieja?

Segurma has an office in Alicante. We handle everything with you in English, and Segurma’s technicians come to the property.

Do I need to be in Spain for the installation?

Someone needs to be at the property to let the technician in and be shown how the system works: you, a family member or someone you trust. If you'd rather be there yourself, we'll fit the date around your next trip.

Who installs and monitors the alarm?

Segurma, a Spanish security company founded in 1986 and listed in the Ministry of the Interior's National Private Security Register under no. 3082. Its own technicians install the system and its own Alarm Receiving Centre watches over it 24 hours a day.
