Why owners abroad choose Segurma

Good protection, good-looking kit, a fair price.

An empty house is an open invitation, unless someone is watching. Most of the year the shutters are down and the post piles up, and that is exactly what burglars and squatters look for. Keeping homes in Spain safe while their owners are away is what we do.

Between visits the alarm stays armed and connected. If a sensor is triggered in February, you know in February, not when you arrive in June.

Squatters kept out

Once squatters settle in, getting them out can take months in court. Caught in the act, the police can step in at once.

How it works with squatters

How it protects you

What actually happens at 2 a.m.

You’re asleep at home in the UK. Your house in Spain is dark and empty. A siren on its own just makes noise; what protects a house nobody is in is everything that happens next.

  1. 1

    A sensor is triggered

A door opens or a camera detector picks up movement. Images and sound go straight to Segurma’s Alarm Receiving Centre.

  2. 2

A person checks before anyone is called

Operators review the images and listen to the audio. Family arriving early? Nothing happens. An intruder? The alarm is confirmed.

  3. 3

The police are alerted, with evidence

Segurma alerts the police and makes the images available to them. It is a report from a licensed security company, not a vague call from a neighbour.

  4. 4

You hear about it at once

The alert reaches your phone wherever you are, and the indoor siren lets the intruder know they have been seen.

Power cut? It carries on.

The control panel connects over the internet and 4G/5G and has a backup battery, so it keeps reporting even if someone switches off the mains or the fibre goes down.

Run it from your phone

Arm, disarm and see every alert from the UK, Ireland or anywhere else, and disarm it remotely when the cleaner arrives.

Your kit

Everything a Spanish home needs. Nothing it doesn’t.

Your system is designed in a free survey of your property, whether it is a seafront apartment or a villa with a plot. Tap each piece to see what it does and where it usually goes.

Example floor plan of a single-storey villa Where each piece of the alarm usually goes: the control panel and keypad in the hall, door sensors on the front door and the terrace doors, camera detectors in the living room and the main bedroom, the siren in the corridor, the IP camera covering the living room and the outdoor detector watching the pool. Squatters

The first hours decide everything.

Caught in the act, it is a police matter. Settled in, it is a court case.

It is the fear we hear most often from owners who live abroad, and it is not unfounded. In Spain, removing squatters once they have moved in usually means going through the courts, and that can take months.

Acting while the intrusion is still happening is a different story: the police can step in on the spot. That is why the speed of the alert matters more than anything else in a house that stays empty for weeks at a time. With a Segurma alarm, the intrusion is verified on camera and passed to the police while it is happening.

Three things that help

  • A deterrent sign that can be seen from the street. Many attempts end there.

  • An outdoor detector if the house has a garden or plot, so the alert comes before anyone reaches a door.

  • Keeping the alarm armed even for short absences, and checking from the app that it is.

Before you choose

How to choose a home alarm in Spain

Whichever company you go with, these are the questions worth asking. They are the ones we would ask if it were our own home.

  1. Who watches it?

Alarms you buy and fit yourself, with no monthly fee, send the alert to your phone and leave the rest to you. A burglar alarm that only makes a noise relies on someone nearby doing something about it, and on an urbanisation in winter, or at a villa with no close neighbours, nobody may. Ask whether the alarm is monitored around the clock by an Alarm Receiving Centre.

  2. Is it connected to the police?

It is the question people search for most, and the answer matters. The police act on verified alarms. Look for one whose operators check the images first and pass a real intrusion to the police with the pictures as evidence, rather than an alarm that simply rings a number.

  3. What if the power or the internet goes?

Storms, power cuts and fibre faults happen, and a line can be cut. Ask how the control panel talks to the centre. Segurma’s uses the internet and the 4G/5G mobile network, with a backup battery, so one failure does not leave the house unwatched.

  4. Can you manage it from abroad?

If you spend part of the year in the UK or Ireland, the app is how you live with the alarm: arming it from the airport, getting every alert, letting the cleaner in, looking through the camera after a storm. Ask to see the app before you sign.

  5. Who installs it, and how soon?

For a holiday home you want a wireless system fitted by the company’s own technicians in a single visit, with no chasing of walls and no cables through the house. Ask how quickly they can come, and whether someone needs to be there on the day.

  6. What will you pay in total?

Look past the first months. Ask for the fee after the offer, the minimum term and the price of any extras, in writing. With Segurma, the Kit Tranquilidad comes to €825.60 over the full 24 months, VAT included, and you see every figure before you sign.

Questions

What owners ask us.

Anything else? Ask us on WhatsApp, in English.

Can I arrange everything in English?

Yes. We answer your questions, prepare your quote and go through the contract with you in English, by phone or on WhatsApp. On installation day the Segurma technician may only speak Spanish, so just message us on WhatsApp if anything needs translating.

Do I need to be in Spain for the installation?

Someone needs to be at the property to let the technician in and be shown how the system works: you, a family member or someone you trust. If you'd rather be there yourself, we'll fit the date around your next trip.

How quickly can the alarm be installed?

Usually within 1 to 5 days of signing up, depending on the area. In much of Andalusia, Murcia and Catalonia it is often a day or two.

How long is the contract, and what will I pay in total?

The minimum term is 24 months for homes (36 months for businesses). With the current offer you pay €24.90 a month for the first 12 months and then the standard fee for your kit, so the Kit Tranquilidad comes to €825.60 over the full 24 months, VAT included. You see every figure in writing before you sign.

Will it still work if the power or the internet goes down?

Yes. The control panel connects over the internet and over the 4G/5G mobile network, and it has a backup battery. If the electricity is cut or the fibre drops, it keeps talking to Segurma's Alarm Receiving Centre over the other route.

Can I keep an eye on the house from the UK or anywhere else?

Yes, through the Segurma app. You can arm and disarm the alarm, get every alert on your phone and, with the Kit Tranquilidad Plus, watch the IP camera live. It's also how you disarm the system remotely when the cleaner or the gardener arrives.

Is an alarm worth it if I only use the house a few months a year?

That's when it makes the most sense. An empty house is exactly what burglars and squatters look for, and nobody may notice for weeks. With a monitored alarm, an intrusion is verified and passed to the police while it is happening, and you find out straight away rather than on your next visit.

What happens if squatters try to get in?

In Spain, removing squatters once they have settled in usually means going to court, which can take months. If the police are alerted while the break-in is still happening, they can act on the spot. That's why an alarm that is verified and passed to the police in real time matters so much for second homes. The deterrent sign and an outdoor detector on the plot add another layer.

Do you cover Mallorca and the Canary Islands?

Yes. Segurma installs in Mallorca and across the Canary Islands, including Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. In the Canaries IGIC applies instead of VAT, so we confirm your exact monthly fee in writing. For Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, ask us first.

Who installs and monitors the alarm?

Segurma, a Spanish security company founded in 1986 and listed in the Ministry of the Interior's National Private Security Register under no. 3082. Its own technicians install the system and its own Alarm Receiving Centre watches over it 24 hours a day.

I have a dog or a cat. Will they set the alarm off?

Tell us about them at the free survey. The camera detectors are placed with your pets in mind, and because an operator looks at the images before anyone is called, a cat on the sofa does not send the police to your door.

Can the alarm warn me about a fire as well?

Yes, if you add a smoke detector (€2.50/month). It goes off if it picks up smoke, whether from a pan left on the hob or a real fire, and it is part of the same system as the rest of your alarm. It has nothing to do with burglars, but in a home that stands empty for weeks it is one less thing to wonder about.
