Almería’s British community is split between the coast at Mojácar and Vera and the inland valleys of the Almanzora, where many people live in country houses with nobody next door. Distance from neighbours is part of the charm, and part of the risk.

Almería

Homes in Almería, and how we protect them

Inland, around Arboleas, Albox, Zurgena and Cantoria, homes are often cortijos and villas on large plots, sometimes at the end of a track. Nobody is going to hear a siren, so what matters is that the alarm reports to a monitoring centre, and that it keeps doing so when the fibre fails: the control panel also connects over 4G/5G and has a backup battery.

On the coast, Mojácar, Vera and Garrucha are mostly apartments and townhouses in complexes, many used as holiday homes.

In much of Andalusia, the installation is often done within a day or two of signing up.

How we protect you

Home security in Almería: how we protect you

A restored cortijo in the Almanzora valley rarely has just one front door. There is the kitchen door onto the patio, double doors to the pool terrace, perhaps a casita for guests and a workshop or garage with its own way in. At the free survey the technician walks all of it: a sensor on each door to the outside, camera detectors in the main rooms, the keypad by the door you actually use and, on an open plot, an outdoor detector covering the approach from the track. Because it is a wireless alarm, nothing is chased into the old stone and plaster. In an apartment at Mojácar Playa or Vera Playa the job is smaller: the front door, the terrace door and a camera detector in the lounge.

The moment a detector picks up movement, its camera records images and sound and passes them to Segurma’s Alarm Receiving Centre, which is staffed day and night, all year round. An operator looks before anything else happens. If it is the friend from Turre who checks on the house while you are away, nobody is sent. If it is someone forcing the terrace doors of a cortijo outside Zurgena, the call goes to the police with the pictures attached, the siren inside lets whoever is there know they have been spotted, and your phone tells you at the same moment. For a house down a rambla track, that is what an alarm connected to the police has to mean: the call to the police comes from someone who has already seen the intruder.

Out here the internet often arrives through a mobile router or an aerial on the roof rather than a fibre line, and a storm over the Sierra de los Filabres can take the electricity with it. Neither interrupts the 24/7 monitoring, because the control panel also reports over the 4G/5G network and has a backup battery. From the app you arm the house as you leave for Almería or Murcia airport, disarm it for whoever cleans the pool and, with the Plus kit, look round the living room from the UK. Every arming and disarming shows in the app with the time, so you can see when the people you trust have come and gone.

So when you lock the gate of a cortijo near Arboleas for a summer back in the UK, or close up a Mojácar apartment after Easter, you are not relying on someone happening to drive past. A monitored alarm does the watching for you, and the people who can deal with a break-in hear about it first, wherever you happen to be.

Your kind of home

Alarms for apartments, townhouses and villas in Almería

The free survey sets the final kit. This is what we usually fit here, depending on the home.

  • Cortijos and country houses inland

Around Arboleas, Albox, Zurgena, Cantoria and Huércal-Overa, many British owners live in a restored cortijo or a newer villa on a large plot of olive and almond trees, reached by a track. We protect the house, the casita and any workshop with a door of its own. The Kit Tranquilidad Plus suits these homes, with an outdoor detector (€6 a month) watching the approach, so the outdoor alarm goes off before anyone reaches a door, and €1 sensors for the extra doors. Some owners add a second IP camera.

  • Villas around Mojácar, Turre and the golf resorts

On the hills between Mojácar and Turre, around Bédar, and on golf resorts such as Desert Springs and Valle del Este, homes are villas with a pool, a garden and terraces facing the sea or the sierra. We protect every door to the garden and the main living areas. The Kit Tranquilidad Plus suits most, so you can look in from home, with an outdoor detector by the pool and an extra door sensor for each terrace. Townhouses on the resorts are usually fine with the Kit Tranquilidad.

  • Apartments in coastal complexes

At Vera Playa, Mojácar Playa, Garrucha, Palomares and along the seafront at Roquetas de Mar, many homes are apartments and duplexes in complexes around a pool, used for holidays and then left for months. We protect the front door and any terrace within reach. Nothing beyond the Kit Tranquilidad is usually needed: door sensor, camera detectors in the entrance and lounge, keypad and siren, with a €1 sensor for a ground-floor terrace door. If you let it in summer, the Plus kit lets you check on it from the UK after each changeover.

When nobody is there

Holiday homes, empty months and squatters in Almería

Almería’s quiet months depend on where the house is. On the coast, Vera Playa, Mojácar Playa and the complexes at Palomares are full in July and August and at Easter, then mostly shuttered from October until the spring. Inland the pattern is often reversed: many British owners spend the mild winter in the Almanzora valley and fly back to the UK for the hottest weeks, or for Christmas with family, leaving a cortijo at the end of a track where nobody may pass for days.

A house nobody can see from the road is what squatters look for. Once someone has moved in, the usual way out is through the courts, and that takes months. While the break-in is still going on, the police can act on the spot. That is why an anti-squatter alarm here has to be monitored: the camera detectors show an operator exactly what is happening, and the police hear about it while the door is still being forced, however far the house is from the village. Before you fly back to the UK, give a tag to the friend who checks the house or to your property manager, so every visit shows in the app, and tell us who has one.

Questions

What owners in Almería ask us

Anything else? Ask us on WhatsApp, in English.

My house is in the countryside with no fibre. Will the alarm work?

Yes. The control panel connects over the 4G/5G mobile network as well as the internet, and the technician checks the signal at your property during the free survey.

Nobody lives near me. Who reacts if the alarm goes off?

Segurma’s monitoring centre. Operators check the images and sound, and if it is an intrusion they alert the police, with the images as evidence. You get the alert on your phone at the same time.

Can it protect the outside of a large plot?

Yes, with an outdoor detector (€6/month) so the alert comes before anyone reaches the house. The survey decides how many you need and where they go.

Our dogs sleep outside at our cortijo near Arboleas. Can we still have an alarm?

Yes. Tell us about the dogs at the free survey. Detectors are placed with pets in mind, so if the dogs have the run of the plot at night, the technician will look at whether an outdoor detector can go somewhere they don’t roam, or whether the protection should start at the doors of the house. And because the operator checks the images before calling anyone, a dog on camera does not bring the police up the track.

Do you cover Roquetas de Mar and the west of the province?

Yes. Segurma installs across Almería province, so flats in Roquetas de Mar and Aguadulce, homes around Almerimar and houses near Níjar are covered just like Mojácar and the Almanzora. Put your postcode in the form and we confirm it straight away. Seafront flats in Roquetas usually need only the Kit Tranquilidad, while a country house with a garden near Níjar may add an outdoor detector.

Can the alarm warn me about smoke at a house far from anyone?

Yes. A smoke detector can be added to the same system for €2.50 a month, and its alert comes to your phone like any other. On a cortijo near Albox or Cantoria, where nobody may notice smoke from the road, that matters, especially if you leave the house for the summer with the fridge and the pool pump still running. The survey suggests where it goes, often the kitchen or the room with the wood burner.

Do I need to be in Spain for the installation?

Someone needs to be at the property to let the technician in and be shown how the system works: you, a family member or someone you trust. If you'd rather be there yourself, we'll fit the date around your next trip.

Who installs and monitors the alarm?

Segurma, a Spanish security company founded in 1986 and listed in the Ministry of the Interior's National Private Security Register under no. 3082. Its own technicians install the system and its own Alarm Receiving Centre watches over it 24 hours a day.
